Letter: We regret to report picnic table thefts at S. Shore Beach

To the editor:

The Little Compton Beach Commission regrets to inform the public that picnic tables are not available for use this summer season. Over the past several years, the eight tables have been set out at the beginning of the season and have received continued use and enjoyment by beach goers.

However, soon after opening for this season, six tables were stolen in one night, and the remaining two the following evening. It seems very unlikely that this was eight random thefts. Rather, it appears this was the work of a few individuals who knew “the lay of the land.”

The commission, beach manager and employees work very hard to provide extra amenities (such as picnic tables, fire permits and overnight camping, to name a few) that are unique and distinguish South Shore Beach from many other beaches in the area. The offering of these privileges relies on the collective effort, cooperation and good behavior of everyone.

The commission regrets that beach goers will no longer be afforded the privilege of having picnic tables for their use and enjoyment. The commission also hopes that users of the other beach privileges will demonstrate their appreciation by being respectful, courteous and by adhering to the rules of the beach at all times.

Most of the tables are marked LCBC under the table top. Anyone having information regarding the stolen tables is asked to contact the Police Department and/or the Beach Commission.
