To the editor:

Engaging in physical and social activities is an important part of the lives of Barrington residents of all ages. Historically, efforts to provide funding for youth sports facilities have taken priority. Now is the time for a new venture — bocce and croquet courts on town property behind the senior center on Markwood Drive. This endeavor, known as the "Barrington Town Senior Enrichment Project” will be handicapped accessible with plenty of parking.

Through herculean efforts of resident Kay Chapin, the Barrington Town Council has given its stamp of approval for the project, along with $7,000 to help fund it. The cost to complete it is between $75,000 and $100,000. Where should the remainder of the funds come from?

Mrs. Chapin has sent out a plea for private donations and many generous folks have come through, adding an additional $2,500 and another pledge from a senior citizen for $5,000 — but not near enough to bring the vision to fruition.

Perhaps the town could tap into the excess of $4 million Barrington received from the federal government to complete the project.

What about the idea of the town matching donor funds to more quickly facilitate the fund-raising efforts? It is time to think outside of the box! 

In the grand scheme of things, the cost of the project is relatively small in comparison to some of the funds the town spends on feasibility studies, engineering services and litigation fees for projects and expenses equal if not less than important as developing this town property for use among residents who ask for little and contribute much — our seniors.
