Letter: Tiverton Republicans voted once, shouldn’t have to again

To the editor:

In early 2017, the Tiverton Republican Town Committee (TRTC) adopted a mission statement by unanimous vote.
Our mission states:
1. To give a voice to conservatives in our lovely town of Tiverton, Rhode Island by working to advance the principles of a smaller and accountable government, business friendly environments, efficient schools and taxes that make sense.

2. We work to support and elect candidates who share these principles.

3. We encourage lively discussion and disseminate news of Republican elements locally in Tiverton, as well as Rhode Island and relevant items on the national scene.

We also have by-laws that were originally written and adopted in 1978, and most recently revised and adopted April 2017.
Rule 5 states:
The Town Committee shall be registered Republicans in the Town of Tiverton and if any member is inactive, or is shown to have worked, or to be working against the interest and success of the Republican Party while a member of this committee may be removed from membership if three-quarters of those present at any meeting shall so vote provided that the notice of said meeting states the substance of the charges against the member.

The TRTC is no longer a once-a-month social club, we are a group of members that adhere to our mission and work hard to accomplish our goals. Being a registered Republican is a requirement for membership but that distinction does not qualify anyone to be a member of our committee.

Claudia Linhares, a distant past-president of the TRTC, made a statement in her letter of October 3, “the new group is mostly made up of TTA PAC supporters who call themselves “the Republicans” and seek only to divide our beautiful town”.

What is dividing our town Ms. Linhares, is this sham of a recall that is based on nothing more than a group of people that cannot accept the outcome of the 2018 election. President Rob Coulter and Vice President Justin Katz were endorsed by the majority TRTC membership and, as a group, we worked very hard, and successfully, resulting in four out of seven of our endorsed candidates elected to the Tiverton Town Council. Prior to that, we endorsed nine candidates for nine seats on the Charter Review Commission, all nine elected.

That is what a successful TRTC looks like, and we are very glad you are no longer a member. RejectTheRecall.com please do not participate. We voted in 2018, we should not have to vote again until 2020.
