To the editor:
The news of a “recall effort aimed at town council Chairman Rob Counter and Vice Chairman Justin Katz” is an embarrassment to the town of Tiverton, a wasted use of money and related resources, and an unnecessary diversion from matters that are far more important to our community than the continuous back-and-forth political squabbling that goes on between two factious groups.
We are approaching two years as new residents of Tiverton. There are things that we like; and, of course, things we think could be improved.
Since our time living here overlapped both town councils we have observed moments when both sides could have sought compromise on issues, but instead chose to disregard the other, subsequently followed by letters to the editor from their cohorts that were quite vindictive.
Who wants to live in a community where the leadership follows what seems to be our new national spirit of always being angry with each other? We can do it differently.
If the current recall effort results in an election, I will vote to keep the current town council in office and make my determination about its performance when it comes time for the regularly scheduled election in 2020.
That is the time for those who oppose the current council to make their case and give us the opportunity to make changes in our representatives if we desire to do so or stay the course.
Please, let’s not put our community through another round of angry diatribe and harsh feelings.
It is not what we desire to be known for in Tiverton.
