Barrington’s town meeting has not and does not truly represent the entire town. It’s time for a change to a representative town meeting.
In many ways it is similar to a town meeting. All residents may attend the annual meeting and talk, ask questions and present proposals for consideration. The major difference is that only town meeting members are allowed to vote. These members should be elected from multiple precincts or areas throughout the town.
By having elected voters from each precinct there is a greater chance of true representation of the town at the annual town meeting. Additionally, this helps to prevent special interests or single issues from dominating the meeting as we have so many times witnessed before.
