Letter: They support Westport farming but what else do M&M stand for?

Westport's heart is all its people, not only a segment of the population. Many of the citizens of Westport care about today's issues and tomorrow's concerns. Sherri Mahoney and Sam Mundel frame their recent Facebook statement and qualifications on “the farm issue” yet that was addressed publicly, debated and settled. Of course Westport supports the “right to farm”.

As candidates - individually and together - M&M have not made clear their views on a wide variety of issues our town is facing and will continue to face.

Two other candidates have made clear, meeting after meeting, year after year, their values and commitment to Westport. Significant community decisions need leadership in the near future - school funding for our youth that reflects the 21st century and covid-19 concerns, the needs and services of the large senior population in a town with no public transportation, the costs of safety and town administration, and support for town employees and essential services.

Selectmen reflect on and address a town-wide view of our community and the public statements from M&M do not do that. They allude to “certain groups” and “places of power” without speaking to all the people who pay taxes, volunteer for the betterment of our community and work through challenging issues that keep Westport a dynamic and vital place to live.

The M&M candidacy is based on the support of a block of citizens, who got up and walked out of a town meeting after their issue was voted on. Will Mahoney and Mundel, as elected officials, simply cater to their team of supporters? Will M&M plan to ignore those of us who value life in Westport and pay our taxes? What is M&M’s interest in our needs and the concerns of a wider community? Let us know what M&M – individually - will bring to our community leadership; what have you done to enrich our community and what are your long term hopes for Westport and its citizens?

We need to hear Selectmen candidates opinions on the issues that are facing our town. How else can we support anyone running to lead our town?
