To the editor:
Disgustingly consistent with Trump's "Go back to where you came from" chant is an editorial published in The Barrington Times on this past June 19 titled "Getting played." It slams the Drag Queen Story Hour at the end of pride month and accuses the drag queens of "playing" the entire town of Bristol, whatever the hell that's supposed to mean. The author combines made up facts with sheer stupidity in a pedantic rant to sully and degrade the LGBT community saying,"Drag Queen Story Hour is designed to bring out the worst in a community."
At a time when hate crimes have consistently risen worldwide the author states, "most adults are open and accepting of homosexuality, this ain't the 1950's. We have all progressed much further than some activist suggest". No we haven't. People are being murdered every day. Despicable. "Drag Queen Story Hour is .... definitely uncomfortable and that's the point, right? Matching drag queens with children," Matching? How perverted.
The author says that "storytellers (should be) is invisible," which is the attitude of the piece towards gays in general. The storyteller is an ancient tradition and many storytellers have achieved great fame and recognition like the wonderful Mr. Rogers. That's absolute hate-filled trash.
The author concludes saying that "being uncomfortable with drag queens reading to children is not homophobic, it's honest. If you can't admit so, you're not being genuine". That smacks of bigotry and hate. It accuses compassionate, loving people of fraud, deceit and inappropriate behavior with children encouraging contempt and violence towards an entire legislatively-protected class of people.
The editorial is unsigned and the Barrington Times will not disclose who wrote it. People deserve and need to know who is the author of this dangerous piece lauding bigotry and hate as virtuous honesty. We will not go back to where we came from. We're here and we're queer.
