To the editor:
I read with interest the lead story “Council Signals Support for Expanded Speed Controls” in the Jan. 30 Post. Just a few weeks ago, I noticed that on Center Street, just off the Pawtucket Ave. intersection, there is a “Your Speed” sign that flashes the current speed of a vehicle passing the 25 mph sign.
I don't know how it was decided to place it there, or if there are other such devices that have gone up in other parts of the city, but I do know that I personally check my speed each time I pass the sign and try very hard to maintain a good speed for the rest of the trip down Center St.
It would be helpful if the police have a way of tracking speed behavior on roads with such “Your Speed” signs to see if they can actually make a difference in people's driving habits. Signs like these would be a lot more driver friendly than the speed cameras that have been installed in other communities.
