Letter: Schools should present both sides of a controversial issue

Posted

Having read the series of letters from the Kickemuit Middle School students published Jan.2, 2020, in the Bristol Phoenix, I was pleased  to read Michael Byrnes’ Jan. 9 follow-up letter to the editor regarding the students’ recommendation for raising the minimum wage. Because I agree with what Mr. Byrnes wrote, I will not repeat it here except to summarize that I also feel only one side of the issue was presented.

I was disappointed that the letter to the editors from some of our legislators and local officials regarding the KMS students letters was not more balanced. It is apparent that the students put a lot of time and effort into studying the three topics about which they wrote. However, I believe to describe the effort as “the product of … critical and strategic thinking” is a bit of a stretch.

As Mr. Byrnes pointed out,  only one side of the raising of the minimum wage issue was presented. Our officials should be more sensitive to that concept.
