Letter: School committee needs to scrutinize the budget

To the editor:

Barrington School Department's expenditures on legal services has more than tripled in the last four years, increasing from $79,342 in 2016 to more than $261,000 in 2019. “In 2019, the cost of legal services exceeded the amount of money earmarked in the school budget by about $140,000.”

If the Schools can find an extra $140,000 in their budget to spend on legal fees, above what they budgeted for, I wonder how much money is being wasted in total.

There is little doubt that Barrington Schools are rated very high. But one should ponder whether the money allocated to the schools is being spent wisely! Is there anyone on the school committee paying attention or are they there for other reasons unknown to the general public? It's time for school committee members to start scrutinizing the budget.
