Letter: Reaction to bike path location is perplexing

To the editor:

There was a recent Tiverton Town Council meeting which included a "public" hearing regarding the Mount Hope Bay Greenway, which is a proposed walk/bike, off-the-road pathway. This path would be located within the RI state rail right of way that runs along the length of Mount Hope Bay in the northwest section of Tiverton.

Unfortunately there was limited means to have an in depth discussion due to the restrictions that the coronavirus has placed on public meetings.

Thus, I would like to expand on a few comments made by some members of the Town Council. There are other concerns too, but there are limits to space that are permitted in this letter.

First, some of the quotes from various members of the Town Council that were made during that meeting: "Sort of goes nowhere,” “It is out of the way.” “This seems sort of isolated,” “an out-of-the-way bike path no one will see,” "an odd area for a bike path,” and “I’m scratching my head about the location.”

It is an unfortunate situation that, after over two decades of effort, some residents and especially those that are our representatives are not aware of the proposed location of the greenway.

The MHBG is a proposal for a walking/biking route that would mostly avoid automobile traffic — a very safe facility. The two local end points in Tiverton would be the Sakonnet River Bridge and the Massachusetts state line. It would be one of the major links in a network of paths in our south coast area and a part of a regional alternate mode of transportation ranging from Newport to Cape Cod.

Its location in Tiverton will not be in isolation for it borders a highly dense location of residential units found in Tiverton.

It will be a path not to be seen, but to be used and to view and to enjoy the sights of Mount Hope Bay.
