Letter: Prevent Metacomet clubhouse razing

To the editor:
It has come to our attention that the contents of the Metacomet Clubhouse will be auctioned off on Dec 9, as per the coming “razing of the building” by Marshall Contractors.

We at the Historical Society ask that the City use all its powers to prevent the destruction of the 100 year old William Walker and Sons building.

The Walker family was one of the original “Ring of the Green” families and recently their old homestead at the corner of N. Broadway and Massasoit made news with Preserve RI as being reborn a “city farm.”

Walker and Sons were the premier local architecture firm (1880-1930) and built a number of imposing public buildings in southern NE, many of them on the National Historic Register, although sadly, Metacomet clubhouse is not.

We realize that the structure has undergone many alterations but perhaps a creative alternative use for this building might be asked for by the City before the wrecking ball is called in. The building does not have the presence of the Squantum Club but it has certainly been much more visible to the daily drivers on Vets Parkway.

Our City needs well more sited structures with such charm and appeal rather than less.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
