To the editor:
As the debate on legalization of marijuana begins in earnest at the State House, residents of Portsmouth need to become involved with the Portsmouth Prevention Coalition.
Charged with substance abuse prevention and education, the folks that volunteer their time, efforts and expertise are faced with dwindling financial resources and little support from state agencies.
Waiting until legalization does or does not happen is too late to invest in Portsmouth’s children. Parents and grandparents need to become invested with their time and financial support to help stifle a growing problem in our community — a problem that shall worsen should legalization occur in the near future.
The statistics on youth access to and use of marijuana are shocking, but, what receives little attention is the strength of modern marijuana. THC levels are far greater today than years past and it is this potency that is underestimated by condoning adults.
Your help in supporting this important cause is welcomed. Please consider a donation of your time or sending of a check to: Portsmouth Prevention Coalition, 2200 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02878.
