To the editor:
The Portsmouth Historical Society, in conjunction with the Town Planning office, will hold an initial organizing meeting on Monday, July 24, at 6 p.m. in the Portsmouth Free Public Library, to discuss the Portsmouth cemetery inventory project.
This project entails updating the current state and town inventories of Portsmouth’s public and private cemeteries. The last such inventory was conducted by a group of Portsmouth residents led by Bob Medeiros in 1993.
Town Planner and Historical Society board member, Gary Crosby, will be leading this project, which is expected to take several months to complete.
While attending a cemetery/gravestone introductory talk by noted local historic preservation specialist Jacob Begin on May 13, over 30 volunteers signed up to assist in this project.
The meeting on July 24 will include a discussion of the tools, forms and procedures for assessing and recording the condition of local cemeteries by Mr. Crosby. Please join us the Portsmouth library if you are interested in learning more about this project.
