Letter: Our first-responders showed caring and professionalism

Bristol residents, please don’t ever ask that our police department or first-responders get defunded.
We have one of the finest police and fire/rescue teams I have ever seen.

Yesterday, Sept. 15, I took a nice leisurely walk up Chestnut Street to Metacom. On my way back, I was going to cross that side street across from the High School. (There is a lot of traffic on the road now due to the detour because of the bridge repair downtown.)

As I approached that road, looking for the traffic, I landed face-first on the pavement. The policewoman who was directing traffic and another policeman in a cruiser came over to me immediately, to ask if I was ok.

I felt OK, just a little embarrassed. They noticed that my eye had swollen already. Quite a sight!

They called the rescue, which arrived quickly. Those two police persons stayed there with me, and the EMTs asked questions and took my vitals.. They wanted to take me to the hospital but I declined. They stayed with me
until they felt I was alright to go home. They gave me a ride home in the rescue.

The young man who sat in the back of the rescue with me was one of the finest young men I have encountered in a long time.

I don’t know the names of these five people who helped me, but I will remember their caring and professionalism for a long time. I pray that they will always be safe doing their jobs.
Bristol can be very proud of their police department and fire/rescue teams.

I can’t thank them enough, but I will honor them daily. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. God bless you always.
