Letter: More is needed to slow down speeding cars in Barrington

I reside with my family on Chachapacassett Road where we are blessed with a fantastic front porch. One of our favorite pastimes is sitting on the porch and watching the world pass by. “Chacha" (as we affectionately call it) is a happy place with a steady stream of walkers, joggers, and cyclists. Unfortunately, the road is plagued with an overabundance of speeding vehicles.

Last year, I filed a complaint with the Barrington Police Department and was pleased to see a traffic counting device on the road soon-after. Unfortunately, that study did not result in any traffic engineering or enforcement changes as far as I can tell. As a former advisor to the New York City Traffic Commissioner, I can attest that simply counting the amount of cars that pass along the road is not going to address the issue of speeding. In addition to a traffic count, the Town would need to monitor vehicular speeds, and consider such measures as putting an officer on the road, making the road narrower, installing better signage, building speed humps, installing automated speed enforcement cameras, and installing a speed radar display.

With Spring, and soon, beach season upon us, I am hoping the Town of Barrington will do whatever it can to address this issue—before the Town has a tragedy on its hands.
