I am writing in response to a letter to the editor on Oct. 17, “Stone Harbour boardwalk burden is not fair to residents,” written by a unit owner at Stone Harbour. I want to make it clear that the views expressed by this unit owner are not shared by all owners of Stone Harbour.

I, along with the rest of the undersigned, do not think the boardwalk maintenance agreement with the town is unfair. We feel that the commitment that we inherited from the developer should be honored.

The maintenance agreement was made with the town by the developer during the building approval process. Without it, construction of Stone Harbour may never have been approved and thus built.

As a past board member and treasurer for five years, I know that the cost of maintaining the boardwalk since its construction has been relatively minimal. A very small price to pay for the privilege of living in a great complex and within a truly unique and wonderful town.

The boardwalk was built and paid for by Stone Harbour, and many of us are proud and happy that we were able to contribute such a wonderful amenity to the town. I was disappointed to see that gate installation on the boardwalk was brought up.

Yes, our agreement allows for restricted access at certain times but, to my knowledge in my 14 years living here, this option has never been considered or even mentioned in any way.

When plans for Stone Harbour first came to light back in 2003/2004, there was opposition and concerns about this project from the town. I would hope that the past 15 years have abated any of these concerns and that the town views us as active, grateful and contributing members of the community that we are.

Hopefully the opinion of one lone unit owner does not change this view.
