Letter: Join us in writing to give animals a voice in court

To the editor:

Two weeks ago, we were invited to meet with Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn to discuss the prosecution and sentencing of animal abuse. During this meeting we presented a written request to Mr. Quinn asking him to create an Animal Abuse Unit within the Special Victims Unit of the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, in order to more effectively prosecute animal abuse.

Please join us in writing to Mr. Quinn at 888 Purchase Street, New Bedford, MA 02740 to request the formation of such a unit, a unit that should also include the regular services of animal advocates in the courtroom — advocates to speak for victims who are unable to speak for themselves.

We also ask you to write Judge Gilbert Nadeau, Jr. to express your dismay at his lenient sentencing of Nicole Botelho. Please tell Judge Nadeau that you want to see animal abuse treated as the serious felony it is. Letters should be addressed to Judge Nadeau at Fall River District Court, 186 S. Main St., 5th Floor, Fall River, MA 02720.

Judge Nadeau reports to Mass. Chief Justice Paul Dawley. We encourage you to copy the Chief Justice on your letter at 24 New Chardon St., Boston, MA 02114.
