To the editor:
I am writing in support of Donna Amaral for Board of Health in the upcoming Westport town election. In my opinion, she is the best of the two candidates running for the seat I am vacating on election day, April 14, 2020.
As many of you might recall, last year at this time I was supporting Bill Harkins for his re-election bid (which he lost). We had worked together for two years to rebuild the board after the horrific animal cruelty issue at the Medeiros farm. We had also worked together to enforce our equine regulation, improve our pig regulation, write a Tenant Farm regulation, and envision an animal site registry.
It is with sincere regret that I cannot support Bill this year. By supporting Article 3 at our February Special Town Meeting, the only Board of Health animal regulation Bill now appears to support is our Tenant Farm regulation, while opposing the other three. This is a position I strongly disagree with.
Although Donna has not been active in town and is not well known here, I support her because I believe she is the best person to replace me on the Board of Health. With her healthcare background and sagacious mind, I believe she would make a great addition to the Board.
