To the editor:

This was the second time this year that Barrington lost power. I had to drive across town during both blackouts. What I witnessed was a potential for a life changing accident. At the middle school intersection and White Church intersection people didn’t even slow down to go through.

Please remember an intersection becomes a STOP SIGN.

There are five lights in our town. Something has to be done.

DOT, my smoke detector is hard wired in my house but a 9 volt battery immediately kicks in when we lose power to work. How about some battery back-up attached to a blinking red light automatically starts when power is lost? This will stop people. This is not a million dollar idea.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
