Letter: Help Rhode Islanders afford the medication they need

Posted

To the editor:

Faced with a diagnosis of a very rare cancer a few years ago, today and everyday I am incredibly grateful for all of the health care I have received, and continue to receive, by wonderful doctors, surgeons, nurses, technicians and others who have committed themselves to helping the cancer community.

Fighting cancer is indeed a battle, and we can’t win it alone. Our lawmakers can help by passing legislation that removes the financial barriers many face to get care and treatment.

The Rhode Island Senate recently voted in support of such legislation that would restrict the use of co-pay accumulator adjustment programs which can restrict a patient’s ability to utilize co-pay assistance programs from manufacturers, non-profits, and others to help reduce their out of pocket amount they’re paying for the drugs they need.

It’s now time for the House to do the same by passing Bill H8041 when it comes to the floor for a vote. Passage of this bill will help ensure all Rhode Islanders – not just those with cancer – face one less hurdle to afford the medications they need.

I urge lawmakers around the state to support this bill to take one more step in making life-saving healthcare more accessible for everyone.
