To the editor:
Bill Harkins deserves the vote of Westport residents in the Board of Health race in this year’s town election.
His opponent may be fine person, and we all welcome her interest in becoming active in town government. We should all remember, though, who stepped forward to restore integrity in the Board of Health department and ensured the humane treatment of animals, reformed the BOH department, and developed positive procedures to support community development while protecting our river and drinking water.
Bill also established a needed position of the Director of Public Health to take the potential politics out of decisions related to public health. He helped re-establish the town nurse position as another needed community outreach to the Westport taxpayers.
His common sense, honesty, dedication, and integrity won him the respect of town residents as he turned around our town BOH department.
Bill Harkins has demonstrated the experience and expertise that we can count on. Please consider him when you vote!
