Letter: Garden Club's been spreading Christmas cheer since 1934

To the editor:

Dear Portsmouth neighbors,

As you drive around town and admire holiday decorations, do you ever wonder who puts the ones up on all the town buildings year after year?

I hope you are happy to see them and appreciate how much they add to the beauty and character of Portsmouth at this time of the year.

Some of you may not know that it’s actually the Portsmouth Garden Club that has been responsible since 1934 of spreading this Christmas cheer.

Like most organizations this year, we have been limited and challenged in what we have been able to do. Meetings have been canceled, fund-raising postponed.

However, despite these setbacks, our three gardens around town bloomed beautifully last summer. Our Public Library, Historical Society, Police and Fire departments, Public Works and a few other departments look very festive right now. Sadly, we were not able to deliver all our wreaths this year or decorate every building.

One of the objectives of our club and our members is the “encouragement of civic beautification” and throughout 2020 we have done so. We hope to continue for many more years.

We are a volunteer organization funded by small grants and our own fundraising efforts. Should you wish to find out more about us, find us at www.portsmouthgardenclub.com.

You can also support us in our work by mail at Portsmouth Garden Club, P.O. Box 826, Portsmouth, RI 02871.

Wishing you a safe and healthy holiday season,

Marilyn L. Brockway

President, Portsmouth Garden Club
