Letter: Editor needs to do better, avoid gender labels
I implore the editorial board to work a little harder as it develops its pieces and ask yourselves, or really any woman who might be close by, to reconsider headlines such as “... Mr. Mayor.”
Can women run for this office? Why yes, yes they can. In fact, among the Bristol’s former town administrators is an executive who herself would have been called “Madam Mayor” had this been the title when she was in office.
Representation matters. Intent does not equal impact. Gendering the title in the headline suggests — even if you don’t mean it — that women aren’t really meant for this job. Please, do better.
