To the editor:
On January 17. the Tiverton Budget Committee received budget requests from the town administrator, and school superintendent. These requests exceed the state cap on spending and would take all the money promised for tax relief.
It's well documented that tax relief was promised if we voted for the casino. Stated many times, "we could lower taxes.” I attended every meeting when I was on the council, many late nights.
After review of the budgets, it is clear they stuffed extra in every account . The capital budget was expanded without thought. No estimates, no engineering, just a bunch of money — we will figure out the details later.
I realize the Town Council has not reviewed the budget, and the old council probably guided the administrator. They have a big job ahead and hopefully can get it reduced to a presentable document.
The School Committee also came in with a big increase. They want more, and will tell you it's for the kids. If you have read the new contract, you will see who the money is for. This town just made a huge investment in our school facilities. We need to digest that first it was a large expenditure that will take us 30 years to pay for.
This is my opinion — I do not speak for all members of the Budget Committee.
