Letter: Don’t let solar farms spoil Portsmouth’s rural character

To the editor:

Dear Town Council,

I am hoping that at the next Town Council meeting the solar ordinance will be addressed and the council will take a hard look at regulations other towns and communities have put in place for responsible solar energy. We need to think about alternative energy and balance where and how intrusive solar “farms” go and how they could work in such a small town on a small island.

The lifespans of these farms is 20 years. It saddens me that for the next 20 years when we all drive on West Main Road, there will be acres of solar panel’s where there was a green space that would have been a beautiful park. This was Navy land, but I just wonder if there could have been a better option?

Let’s learn from this so that there’s not more of the same. We have little woodland, farms and acreage that have not developed, do we really want it all to go the way of solar farms? And if solar is part of Portsmouth’s future,  let’s be sure it doesn’t get added at the cost of Portsmouth residents and its natural beauty and rural character with a good solid thoughtful plan.

Sincerely,

Lark Roderigues
