Letter: Dog owners: Please be responsible with your pets

To the editor:

I felt compelled to write so hopefully I can help to avoid another dog (or perhaps a child) from encountering a loose dog in the neighborhood.

While walking our dog on a leash in the neighborhood, we came around the corner, and a dog who was not properly contained on her leash charged at us. She chased my dog into the bushes and proceeded to bite her. My dog weighs 13 pounds and was unable to flee from the big dog. My dog was yelping and flailing in the bushes trying to escape.

My boyfriend proceeded to go after the dog and managed to free our dog who ran frantically down the street. She sustained a bite to her ear and it was red and swollen. We had to take her to the vet for medication and was told she was lucky to have lived through the ordeal.

It was a horrific experience that I don’t want anyone else to have to endure. We were devastated and livid. This was the third attempt at my dog, with the dog getting loose all three times! The dog is able to jump their fence so no one is safe at any time.

What if it had been a child? We have several small dogs and children in the neighborhood who ride tricycles, etc.

Please, dog owners — be responsible for your dogs and respectful of your neighbors. You wouldn’t want another incident to happen. It could be worse than what we went through. We are very grateful to still have our fur baby with us.
