Letter: Disappointed by no-shows at candidate forums

To the editor:
I find it troubling when candidates for public office refuse to debate their opponents or to participate in local forums.

Many voters learn about candidates through public discussion and all voters deserve to hear information about issues and opinions from those who want to represent them.

As a former lifelong resident of East Providence and proud Townie, I am puzzled by the decisions of John Peters in District 65 (against Matthew Dawson), Anthony Sionni in District 63 (against Katharine Kazarian) and Anna Maria Peters in District 18 (against Robert Britto) to decide NOT to participate in the scheduled forums sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Rhode Island and the East Bay Media Group.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
