Letter: Cutting school budget does not make sense

To the editor:

In response to Mr. Rimoshytus, I absolutely disagree that cutting the school budget would make any sense given the uncertainties and costs of reopening the schools. We do not yet know what extra resources we will need to ensure our children are learning as we navigate new waters. There is a chance we may need extra staff for buses and classrooms to social distance children. I think it is safe to say that most parents are anxious about what the year will look like and cutting the school budget would add to these anxieties. In fact, it seems likely the schools will need more and not less funding.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
