Letter: Community group promotes ‘sight preservation’ at local schools

Posted

Members of the Lions Club of Bristol County recently completed vision screening tests in three local elementary schools as part of the club’s community service mission.

Lions Judy Ciociola, JoAnn Silva and Donna Castro screened more than 680 students in third, fourth and fifth grades. They referred about 20 percent of the students for further testing by the school nurse.

The club wishes to thank the following nurses for coordinating the screening: Kim McCormack at High Cole, Julie Pirri at Colt Andrews and Margurite Crocker at Guitars. As the coordinator of the program, I can attest to their dedication to helping our members screen so many students in a two-week period.

The Lions Club of Bristol County typically holds dinner meetings monthly, and anyone is welcome to attend to discuss the international mission of sight preservation, the statewide effort to treat children’s cancer and other charity initiatives.

The group’s next fundraiser will be the annual pig roast at Colt State Park on Aug. 7. Tickets are on sale now for $20 per person. Contact Jessica Almeida at 401-580-1331 for tickets or more information. Contact Membership Chairperson Pat Terra at 401-297-0392 for information about the club’s activities.

He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far.
