I apologize for bringing up this divisive topic. I strongly oppose House Bill 5787, the “Equality in Abortion Coverage” Act, which is being promoted by our elected State Representatives in the RI General Assembly.
This bill provides for abortion coverage in the state Medicaid program. It tramples First Amendment conscience rights, forcing citizens to fund abortion-on-demand for any reason and throughout all nine months of pregnancy.
The majority of citizens oppose taxpayer funding of abortion.
In 2019 the RI Legislature passed the Health Care Privacy Act which removed safeguards that prevented late-term abortions. A 2019 poll found that over 74 percent of Rhode Island citizens oppose third trimester abortion. Forcing taxpayers to fund abortion is a double crime against humanity and must not be allowed.
Our elected officials are pushing this campaign for a coalition of lobbying groups instead of serving the citizens they represent by allowing us to vote on this issue. They say it’s about equal coverage, but they cannot expect those who morally object to the destruction of pre-born human life to pay for it.
This moral dilemma requires another solution such as access to the non-profit groups willing to provide abortion funding to those seeking it. Tax dollars are not provided to non-profit pregnancy resource centers that provide women with life-affirming services. Private pro-life citizens fund these organizations which empower women and protect their children. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander; those who support the entitlement of abortion-on-demand should fund it.
If you agree with me, please let your representative know. Among the primary sponsors of this extreme legislation are our locally elected State Representatives:
Rep. Liana Cassar, District 66 (Barrington, Riverside, East Providence) firstname.lastname@example.org; and Rep. Jason Knight, District 67 (Barrington, Warren) rep-Knight@rilegislature.gov
