Letter: A few tips for Westport’s Special Town Meeting on Saturday

To the editor:

Your paper has provided excellent coverage of events and discussions leading up to Westport’s Special Town Meeting scheduled for October 3. I would like to add a few reminders for attendees.

The meeting will be held at 10 a.m. behind the high school with the same setup as we used for the Annual Town Meeting in July. Parking is available in both the north and south lots. As attendees walk from the parking lot to check in, they will be greeted by volunteers who will distribute fliers explaining procedure. Early arrival is encouraged as COVID screening will slow check-in. Anyone with mobility issues should park in the south lot where a golf cart will be available for transport to the meeting site.

Masks and proper physical distancing are required. Anyone unable or unwilling to wear a mask will not be excluded, but will be required to sit in a separate area marked off for that purpose. There will be plastic folding chairs set up, but attendees may bring their own more comfortable chairs if they prefer.

As I write this, the weather forecast is sunny but cool. Discussion may be heated, but the air will not be so all should dress warmly enough. Attendees are also advised that the set-up will have them facing the rising sun making hats and sunglasses helpful. Attendees should also bear in mind when choosing their footwear that they will have to traverse grass that may be wet with dew.

The warrant is small, only five articles, but we will be re-visiting the town’s by-laws regarding non-medical marijuana businesses. Any Westport registered voters wanting a say in that and the other decisions at the meeting, is invited and encouraged to join us on October 3.
