PORTSMOUTH — As they did last summer, a group six kayakers plan to embark from Warwick Neck en route to Weaver Cove in Portsmouth on Wednesday, July 24, to retrace the route of Continental Army troops under the command of Lt. Col. William Barton 242 years ago.
The July 1777 raid caught British troops by surprise, allowing Barton's raiders to capture British commander, Brig. Gen. Richard Prescott.
The East Bay Sea Kayakers have been hampered in their attempts by impending bad weather but they have a favorable weather window to perform the journey Wednesday.
They plan to launch from Warwick Neck at 3:30 p.m. and are scheduled to arrive at Weaver Cove at about 6:30 p.m.
After about 30 minutes, they plan to depart on their 20-mile journey back.
The kayakers will be met by a group of well-wishers from the Portsmouth Historical Society.
More information on the event can be found at www.portsmouthhistorical.com, where and changes in the event schedule due to unforeseen circumstances will be posted.
