Firefighters and police officers responded to a boating emergency in Hundred Acre Cove on Thursday afternoon, May 28. The incident occurred at about 2:20 p.m.

Betsy Falvey and her daughter Lauren had rented kayaks from the rental shop located next to Walker Farm, and the women were not on the water too long before Betsy realized her kayak was taking on water.

"We kind of knew it was going under," said Lauren. "It was just a matter of time."

Lauren told police that she paddled over to her mother's boat as it started to sink — Betsy then jumped from her bright green kayak onto the bow of her daughter's bright blue kayak.

Meanwhile firefighters launched their inflatable boat from the Walker Farm boat ram and powered across the cove. A Sunset Drive resident also leant a hand in the rescue, as two Barrington police officers boarded his boat at his dock on the east side of the cove and responded to the scene.

Betsy Falvey boarded the fire department's inflatable boat, which accompanied Lauren as she paddled back to the Walker Farm boat launch.

The police officers riding in the citizens powerboat were able to salvage the green kayak before it sunk to the bottom of the cove.

EMTs checked out Betsy once she returned to shore to make sure she was OK. The Falveys are from Norfolk, Mass.
