Joseph C. Martin of Newport died at the age of 93 on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2017. He was the loving husband of Marcia (Simms) Martin.

Joe was born in Bristol, R.I. on Dec. 17, 1923, to Mariano C. Martin and Mary (Bettencourt) Martin.

He worked as a mechanic for the former Rego’s Garage and Bristol County Dodge for many years before retiring. Joe continued to work part-time as a locksmith for a number of years.

Besides his wife of 34 years, he leaves one daughter, Angela (Neil) Wells; three sons, Ned (Marianne) Mathis, Chris (Betty) Mathis, and Kevin Mathis and Theresa Kulpinski; three grandsons, Joshua (Beth) Mathis, Marc Mathis and Brian Mathis; and two great-grandchildren, Thomas and Cecilia Mathis. He also leaves brother-in-law John Castro, nieces Arlene Webber, Elaine Roderick, Linda Sylvia and Susan Benevides, and nephews John Castro and Joseph Martin.

Mr. Martin is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Mariano C. Martin Jr., and sisters, Mary Benevides, Sarah Martin and Helen Castro. 

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 96 Hillside Ave., Newport, R.I.
