Jones, who has served as chief of police since 2018, took over the town administrator role after former town administrator Chris Cotta retired in December. Before serving as the police chief, he served as a member of the Tiverton Police Department since 1989.
Jones was one of the two applicants that the personnel board forwarded to the town council for consideration. While the second applicant withdrew his application, town council vice president David Paull said Jones is by far the most qualified candidate for the job.
“The chief has proven to be a solid and steadfast leader,” Paull said. “The chief cares deeply about this community and strives to do what is right day in and day out.” Jones has been praised by members of the council for his ability to bring in grant money to the town in the past, and according to Paull, has already made a significant impact at the town hall.
Jones is expected to step down from his position as police chief. Paull said Deputy Chief of Police James Costa is believed to be interested in the position.
While Jones’ contract was on the agenda to be officially approved during the next town council meeting on Monday, March 24, it was pushed back at Jones' request to the next town council meeting on Monday, April 7.
