John T. Lonergan, 72, Riverside

John T. Lonergan, 72, of Park Drive, Riverside, died peacefully on May 22, 2020. He was the beloved husband of Sharon E. (Davis) Lonergan. Born in Providence, a son of the late Thomas F. and Mary A. (Ferry) Lonergan, he lived in Riverside for 42 years.

Mr. Lonergan was a mail handler for the United States Postal Service for 31 years before retiring in 2018. John was a communicant of St. Brendan Church. A sports enthusiast, he was an avid golfer and a member of the Brown University and United States Postal Service Golf Leagues. He was a devoted Providence College Basketball, New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox fan. Mr. Lonergan was a United States Marine Corp Veteran.

Besides his wife of 45 years, he is survived by three sons, Jay P. Lonergan of Riverside, Michael C. Lonergan of Duxbury, Vt., and Brian J. Lonergan of Riverside; three sisters, Kathryn M. Lonergan of Troy, N.Y., Mary E. Lonergan of West Greenwich and Ann F. Dempsey of South Kingstown and six grandchildren, Caitlin, Hayley, Thomas, Grant, Brianna and Riley.

A private family Funeral Service was held in the W. Raymond Watson Funeral Home, Riverside followed by Burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Flowers are respectfully omitted. Contributions in John’s memory to the Good Neighbors Soup Kitchen, 55 Turner Avenue, Riverside, R.I., 02915, would be deeply appreciated.

When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
