John H. Hawkins, 60, of Barrington

John H. Hawkins, age 60, of Barrington, passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2019 at Briarcliffe Manor where he was well cared for by an amazingly competent staff.

John’s life was full and revolved around sailing, and the marine industry. As a young boy he participated in the RI Special Olympics, enjoyed boating in all capacities, fishing, swimming and working at the family boatyard in Bristol.

John graduated from Barrington High School ‘77, and he started working at Goetz Custom Boats where he learned much from Eric Goetz and his valued colleagues. John made the most of all opportunities, and used his abilities to the fullest.

He loved to travel and be outdoors as much a possible. One of his greatest joys was participating on the Race Committee Boat of the Barrington Yacht Club for Tuesday Night racing. John also had a special and very memorable opportunity to race in the Newport to Bermuda Race on the yacht First Light

Off-season when not sailing, John was an avid skier who spent every winter on the slopes at Waterville Valley, but he always preferred the warmer temps of Florida and St. Thomas where he thoroughly enjoyed all water sports, and especially lounging on the beaches.

John was the son of Nelson L. Hawkins (deceased), and Louise Hawkins, and is survived by his brother, Nelson L. (Chip) Hawkins Jr. and wife Susan, a niece Sarah Hawkins of San Francisco, and nephew Alden Hawkins of NYC. Private burial with services handled by Smith-Mason Funeral Home.
