Joe Leal Costa, 69, of Bristol

Joe Leal Costa, 69, of Oliver Street passed away on Aug. 29, 2019. He was the husband of Cecilia (Simoes) Costa.   

Born in Porto Judeu, Terceira, Azores, he was the son of the late Jose Nunes Costa and Maria Leal (Castro) Costa.  He is survived by his children, Joe Costa, Steve Costa, Eduina Fortin and her husband Nick, all of Bristol, and Joel Costa and Jonathan Costa of Tulare, Calif.;  grandchildren Crystal Costa, Tifffany Costa, Joseph Costa, Fiona Costa, Maya Costa, Domenic Gemelli, Victoria Fortin, Jacob Costa, Landon Costa and Faith Costa; and great-grandchildren Kayleigh Shepard, Carson Zina, Julian Zina and Melody Tatro. He was the father of the late Albertina Maria Costa.

Mr. Costa was educated in Portugal and employed as a machine operator for IUOE Local 57. He was a member of Banda Filarmonica St. Isabel.

His funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 7, at 10 a.m. from the George Lima Funeral Home, 367 High St., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Church, 577 Wood St. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Calling hours are Friday, Sept. 6, from 4 to 8 p.m.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
