Freshman striker Thea Jackson scored four goals as the Mt. Hope girls soccer team thrashed Barrington 6-0 in a Division I home game on Friday evening. Senior midfielder Abby Razzino and sophomore forward Lilliana Redman also scored as the Huskies pasted fifteen shots on Barrington goalkeeper Helena DeFanti. Mt. Hope improved their overall record to 3-1, 2-1 in D-I beating Chariho and St. Mary Academy while losing to North Kingstown. The senior laden team is both skilled and heavy in leadership with captains Razzino, Scarlett Drawbridge and Shivani Metha. The deep Huskies are ready to take on Division I and hope to make a deep playoff run.
“It starts from the top,” said Huskies head coach Kerri Giarrusso. “We have a great senior class this year. When they are woking hard everyone else is working hard. They are playing together as a team. It doesn’t matter who does what they just get the job done.”
Huskies seniors are Cloey Dias, Emma Serbst, Kaylee Pattie, Teah Sousa, Karsyn Medeiros, Grace Greenslade and Sarah Gale. Both Greenslade and Razzino missed last season with ACL injuries. Both are athletic and strong players that will help this year’s team immensely.
“Having them as midfielders, they control everything,” Coach Giarrusso said. “They win 50-50 balls, they control the middle and they are great leaders and that’s what we need.”
But it’s freshman Thea Jackson that looks to be the real deal.
“Thea, that girls is going to be special,” said Coach Giarrusso. “She’s scored five goals and a couple of assists in two Division I games. She’s going to be tough to mark. She has speed, she has technical ability, she has good vision and can take girls one on one. She’s going to be the next big thing.”
The Huskies are loaded with speed on offense with junior forward Hannah Razendes who scored 16 goals last season and speedy sophomore Lilliana Redman playing on the wings.
“We have speed, speed, speed. With those three up top, it’s hard to defend,” Coach Giarrusso said.
Defensively the team has three goalkeepers vying for playing time freshman Adriana Botelho and sophomores Lola Silva and Emily Moran. The tall and athletic Moran has the edge after shutting out Barrington.
“They need game experience,” said Coach Giarrusso.
Moran replaced Botelho in the loss to North Kingstown and has played well since.
“I gave Emily the chance to start today and she killed it,” Coach Giarrusso said. “She got her first varsity shut out today. She’s doing well.”
Next up: The Huskies take the road to play three straight away games against Smithfield on Tuesday, Cumberland on Thursday and East Greenwich next Monday all start at 6:30 p.m.
