Instagram account puts spotlight on poor parking in Bristol

Rhode Island drivers have often been ranked poorly compared to the other states in the union, and one local woman has decided to document some of it on an Instagram account. The account, called 02809cantpark, was created last month. The woman, who spoke to the Phoenix but wished to remain anonymous, has lived on High Street for eight years after moving here from a suburb of Manhattan with her husband for work. “We moved here almost sight unseen. We came to visit, we saw how darling and cute the town was, fell in love with the classic red, white, and blue stripe down the street, and decided this was going to be where we made our home for the foreseeable future.”

While both she and her husband fell in love with the town, they did not fall in love with the parking situation. She said she is an avid walker, often taking strolls around town. On those strolls, she began to notice poor parking habits, particularly people leaving their cars too close to, or within, crosswalks.

“I was just generally uncomfortable with my safety, based on how my neighbors are treating the roads,” she said.

The owner of the account said her concerns originally started with drivers’ willingness to take what she described as dangerous left-lane turns. She began posting on the account to express her frustration with the parking situation, as well as to remind her neighbors to check their parking jobs, often taking pictures of poorly parked cars near her home on High Street. However, two weeks ago, other people from the town began sending in photos as well. “I started getting DMs from people just sharing their frustration, and last week I received the first user submission.”

Her photos document cars parked poorly throughout town. Some are parked on crosswalks. Some are parked on curbs. Some are parked on the wrong side of the road.

The woman hopes that some of these concerns catch the attention of the Bristol Town Council. She believes more needs to be done to educate and communicate about where people can and cannot park. She said any car parked on a crosswalk creates a safety hazard, noting that her house is right near a school, and students often use those crosswalks to get to school every morning. In addition, she will also post on her Instagram story some pictures of cars that she caught in the moment.

The owner reiterates how much she loves Bristol and living on the water, however she does not see herself running out of content for the new Instagram page anytime soon.
