Huskies wallop Woonsocket 54-15, after losing to Chariho

All ten Huskies scored as Mt. Hope walloped Woonsocket 54-15 in a Division II away game on Friday night. The win improved the Huskies record to 9-4, 7-3 in league play. Mt. Hope is currently in sixth place as they have just nine games left to the season. After losing to Chariho 59-44 in a home game on Thursday night, Mt. Hope pounded the overmatched Villa Novans and held leads of 19-0 in the first quarter and 32-3 at halftime, before letting up.

“So far this season, we’ve come out pretty strong,” said co-captain Lauren Clarke-Pais. She credited co-captain Abby Razzino for the team’s winning ways. Razzino, who was out injured all last season, is a skilled point guard that can shoot from the outside as well as drive to the basket and score inside. Razzino is also a terrific playmaker and on court captain that calls out the plays.

“Without Abby, we wouldn’t be as good as we are,” she said. “Abby does most of our playmaking. She puts up shots. She is always there for us.”

Senior center Reyn Ferris, Maddy Butterworth and Emily Moran each scored 9 points against the Villa Novans. Elsa White scored 7 with a 3-pointer, Abby Razzino netted 6 points, Adriana Botelho scored 4, Shivani Metha and Miley Boucher each scored 3 and Clarke-Pais and Sofia Haberman each netted 2.

“We’ve been improving,” said Huskies head coach Katie Kline. “I told them, I don’t care what team we are playing. We need to play Mt. Hope basketball every game.”

“We have been gelling offensively, said Razzino, “Communication is a big aspect of it. It’s all about mental toughness and picking each other up on the court.”

Ferris scores 13 points in loss to Chariho

Ferris led the team with 13 points in the loss to Chariho. Clarke-Pais scored 11, Razzino netted 7, White scored 6, Butterworth and Moran each scored 3 and Metha added 2.

The Huskies were defenseless against the hot-shooting, second place Chargers who drained nine 3-pointers during the game.

“Chariho was super fast and efficient with the ball,” said head coach Katie Kline. “We struggled defensively. It wasn’t our best game, but we’ll learn from it.”

Mt. Hope lost starting guard Lily DaSiveira to an injury last week. It’s not sure if or when the freshman guard will return to the lineup.

“Filling her spot is going to be difficult,” said Razzino. “But I think we have the players on the bench that will be ready to step up. We just have to keep working together and keep a positive mind set.”

So far, Butterworth has filled in nicely with the starters in DaSilveira’s stead. The freshman guard is small and quick, has good ball handling skills and a good outside shot. She has scored 12 points over the last two games with two 3-pointers.

Next up: Mt. Hope travels to Mount St. Charles on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and hosts East Greenwhich on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
