East Providence — The Mt. Hope baseball team lost to Chariho 5-2, in the Division II Pod I semifinals at Pierce Field on Saturday night. The Huskies ended their season with a 15-7 overall record with a 2-2 record in the playoffs. The Huskies beat Smithfield 11-8 in the second round of the playoffs, after getting a first round bye. They beat Chariho 5-2 to gain the Pod I winner's bracket semifinals, only to lose to Chariho the loser's bracket winner, in two games.
“I want to thank my seniors for their four years of hard work and dedication,” said coach Mazarella. “They came into the program and took a Division III team and developed it into a Division II semifinalist.”
“These seniors did a tremendous job developing the program to where it is. They have left the team in good hands and we should have sustained success over the next four years,” he said. “They will be missed at Guiteras Field.”
Senior pitcher Charlie Amarante started the game for the Huskies. Amarante, normally a very stingy pitcher, gave up four hits and walked four throwing 58 pitches in the first two innings. Chariho scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to make the score 2-1, and the Chargers scored four more in the second to make the score 5-2.
“It was a highly emotional game,” said Head Coach Mike Mazarella. “Charlie didn’t start well for us and we had one error that cost us a couple of runs,” he said.
Freshman Ethan Leary entered the game in the third and blanked the Chargers the rest of the way. Leary struck out one and walked one in four innings.
“Ethan pitched fantastic for a freshman,” said coach Mazarella. “The team played well defensively. It was a good team effort.”
Standout junior shortstop Cam Santerre made a number of brilliant plays in the field over the two games.
“Cam is an unbelievable talent. He got to balls that he had no business getting to. He is one of the best in the division at shortstop,” said coach Mazarella.
The Huskies started the game red hot offensively, scoring two runs in the first inning off Chariho starter Dylan Labelle. Amarante led off with a walk and moved to second on a Caden Cabral single. Junior Cam Santerre singled scoring Amarante. Stew Kay singled to load the bases. C.J. Casalino singled home Cabral to make the score 2-0. London Camelo lined out. Nick Simeone struck out and Jalen Kopecky grounded to third base to end the inning.
“We got off to a hot start, then their pitching held us at bay from there,” said coach Mazarella. “Their pitching was great all series. They have the best staff in the division. Pitching wins in my book,” coach Mazarella said.
“We scattered hits, but they played well defensively. It’s tough luck. It’s baseball. Some days those balls fall in and some days they don’t,” he said.
The Rhode Island Interscholastic League handed out awards after the game. Seven Huskies were named to the All-Division II South team.
