Mt. Hope striker Angela Lee’s goal and a strong effort by freshman defender Abby Razzino and the Huskies’ defense lifted the girls’ soccer team over Bay View, 1-0, in a home game at Vendituoli Field on Tuesday evening. The Huskies started the season 0-2 but have now won two of three and have evened their record at 2-2-1 in Division I competition.

“A lot of new girls joined our roster and we have a full new team,” said Head Coach Kerri Ferreira. “We are starting to trust each other. Defend together, attack together and play together.”

The two teams clashed in the first half. Bodies collided and players cut down their opponents with take-down slides. Bay View dominated play early. With the wind at their backs, they consistently beat the Huskies to the ball and put three solid shots on junior goalkeeper Kyra Boucher. She saved them all.

On one, Boucher was surrounded by both teammates and Bengals during a corner kick. The kick came out to Bengals midfielder Kaleigh Quinn, standing in the middle of the box, and she blasted it toward the net. Boucher slid to her right and made the save, catching the ball and holding it.

With 17 minutes left in the first half, the Huskies rallied. Freshman Grace Greenslade brought the ball up the left side of the field and saw junior striker Angela Lee waiting to break through the Bengals’ defense. Greenslade placed a beautiful pass by the defenders toward the middle of the field. Lee shot through the Bengals’ defense, one touched the pass as goalkeeper Emma Conley burst out to meet her, and easily redirected the ball by the keeper into the left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.

“It was a great pass,” coach Ferreira said. “Angela was very patient. She took a few touches and placed it in the back of the net. That’s what I like. One-two soccer.”

Bay View, stunned by the goal, pressed even harder in the second half. Many of the Bengal opportunities were stymied by the Huskies’ strong defensive play. Center back Abby Razzino was a force. The freshman broke up play after play for the Huskies, as Bay View managed to get only two shots on Boucher in the second half.

“She’s really solid back there,” coach Ferreira said of Razzino. “I knew if our team was going to be successful, that I need to play her at center back. She plays like an upperclassman. She gels with the team and everyone trusts her.”

“We are really starting to come together,” said coach Ferriera. “We definitely want to be a playoff team.”

Next up: The Huskies play at Scituate today at 3:45 p.m. and play Smithfield at home next Tuesday.
