The Hurricanes boys' high school hockey co-op between Mt. Hope, Rogers, Middletown, Tiverton and East Providence picked up its first win of the 2024-25 season last weekend, a 5-3 decision over the West Warwick/Exeter-West Greenwich collaborative at the St. George's rink in Newport Saturday night, Jan. 18.
The sides played a scoreless first period. The 'Canes then wouldn't trail the rest of the way after Colton Kerrison potted the game's first goal just over two minutes into the second period. Kerrison put the locals up 2-0 about three minutes later, his second tally coming off an assist Mt. Hope's Jackson Stringer. The helper was the first of the winter for the sophomore defenseman.
The Knight Wizards got one back late in the period, but the Hurricanes responded immediately following the ensuing faceoff. Brayden Swanycamp scored just 12 seconds later off of Austin Silvia's third assist of the year to give the locals a 3-1 at the end of one.
The sides traded goals in the third. WW/EWG started the scoring about five minutes in. Evan Agren regained a two-goal for the locals with his fifth tally of the year about two minutes later. The Knight Wizards again trimmed their deficit to one midway through the period, but the 'Canes later iced the victory on David Silvia's empty-net goal with 10 seconds to play.
Lucas Nicoletti made 31 saves to pick up the win net for the locals. Agren and Silvia upped their team-best points to seven apiece. Agren leads the Hurricanes with five goals, Silvia the same with six assists. Kerrison doubled his goal tally to date up to four.
