Question of the week: Would you support legislation that would make it illegal for anyone under the age of 16 to operate an electric scooter?
Joseph DePasquale — Independent:
Currently RIGL § 31-3-2.2, prohibits anyone under the age of 16 years old from operating an electric motorized scooter or bicycle on public ways. Local authorities do enforce the law as well as the helmet regulations. I support this law. Public safety is always a priority.

Electrified transportation opens up exciting possibilities for adult commuters, but we need to be thoughtful about its use by children. Many of these devices travel fast, and the potential for serious injury is high when used irresponsibly. Rhode Island has long recognized 16 as the appropriate age for operating motor vehicles. That same logic should apply to newer devices. I support prohibiting children under 16 from operating motorized transportation devices, including e-bikes, scooters, and electric skateboards.
