EAST PROVIDENCE — It's November again. Colorful leaves are falling during this cooler autumn season. In addition to celebrating a day of Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November, the 11th day of November is reserved as Veterans Day.
It was originally called Armistice Day marking the end of the Great World War, that is World War I. It is a day when veterans and members of the military are remembered, honored, and thanked for their sacrifices and service.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the opening of the East Providence freeway, or today's Interstate 195, to traffic. Two years later, in November 1961, it was rededicated as the East Providence Veterans Memorial Expressway.
In December 1959, the public was asked to submit names of citizens of East Providence who served during WWII and in Korea to receive memorials on the bridges on the freeway. So, to repeat history, the public was recently asked again to submit names for the special Honor Roll that appears on this page.
Additional names can be submitted, along with corrections and inquiries, to epvme@hotmail.com until October 2021. A virtual Military Honor Roll will be posted in January 2020, and updated as needed, on the Historical Society's website, ephist.org. This list of men and women who served from WWII to the present may be used as a special tribute on November 11, 2021, for the 60th anniversary of the naming of the expressway for East Providence veterans and military service members.
Note: No residence or military background checks were made. Inclusion on this list does not convey eligibility for military benefits. The East Providence Post and East Providence Historical Society are not responsible for errors.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
