EAST PROVIDENCE — The Northeast Amateur Invitational tournament tees off next week at Wannamoisett Country Club, the 58th annual playing of the prestigious event running June 19-22 and once again providing patrons with a glimpse of some future stars of the game.
Cole Hammer, of the University of Texas, is the top-ranked player in the field, entering the tournament No. 4 in both the World Amateur and Scratch Golf rankings. Hammer recently completed a superb first season for the Longhorns, named as the NCAA Division I Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman Award winner and a PING First-Team All-America selection. After winning the Western Amateur and Azalea Invitational last summer, he shared medalist honors three times this collegiate season, including the NCAA Austin Regional.
UT teammate Pierceson Coody, and Georgia’s Trent Phillips join Hammer in the Northeast field and were also selected the PING All-Freshmen Team.
Florida State’s John Pak (was a PING First-Team All-America selection as well after winning four times this season, including the Atlantic Coast Conference individual championship.
Like Hammer, four other members of the field played last week on the United States team in the Arnold Palmer Cup, including John Augenstein (Vanderbilt), Quade Cummins (Oklahoma), Will Grimmer (Ohio State) and Peter Kuest (BYU).
The local talent in the field includes several Wannamoisett members like reigning state Player of Year Tyler Cooke, former state and New England Am champ member Bobby Leopold and former state am champ and Notre Dame sophomore Davis Chatfield. Another Rhode Islander in the field is four time state Junior champ and former Classical standout Patrick Welch, who just completed his freshman season at the University of Oklahoma. Also of note, former Barrington High School standout Matt Broome, now playing as a mid-amateur, is scheduled to compete as well.
After playing in the U.S. Open this past weekend at Pebble Beach, players expected to make the cross-country trek back for the Northeast include Massachusetts native Matt Parziale, a former U.S. Mid-Amateur champ, Stewart Hagestad, Noah Norton (Georgia Tech) and Chandler Eaton (Duke).
The Northeast field made headlines last week when an invitation was offered to and accepted by former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and the lead announcer for the NFL on CBS, Tony Romo. Romo, a plus .3 handicap, won the 2018 American Century Celebrity Championship and has played in three PGA Tour events to date, most recently the AT&T Byron Nelson near his home in Texas last month when he shot rounds of 76-74 to miss the cut.
One player who won’t contest the Northeast this summer is defending champion Justin Suh. The former University of Southern California standout completed his career with the Trojans earlier this spring and made his professional debut at Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial Tournament two weeks ago. Still, the 2019 field includes 75 of the top collegiate players in the country and 43 Division I PING All-Region selections.
