Grand jury rules no charges should be brought in Little Compton death

The state will not pursue murder charges in the death of a Swansea man who died following a party in Little Compton last fall.
Steven Velozo, 47, died following a party at his mother's Pottersville Road home on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022. The Office of the Massachusetts Medical Examiner had ruled earlier this year that the cause of death was 'mechanical asphyxia,' which occurs when physical force interferes with the uptake or delivery of oxygen.
However, the Rhode Island Attorney General's Office said Wednesday that a Statewide Grand Jury charged with investigating the matter "determined that no criminal charges should be brought against any person."
Velozo, a former Somerset resident living in Swansea, worked as a food service director for Berkshire Healthcare. An accomplished bowler, he was a member of a four-man team that won the Massachusetts State Bowling Championship. He was also an accomplished chef and loved the Patriots and Red Sox.
Little information on the circumstances surrounding his death have been released, and Little Compton Police have declined to comment on the matter since the Massachusetts medical examiner's ruling.
