Who would have thought that Warren, the smallest town in the smallest state, would be known for something so large? Since 2000 Frerichs Farm has hosted the Southern New England Giant Pumpkin Grower’s Annual Weigh-off on Columbus Day Weekend. Last year, more than 3,500 people from all corners of New England and New York come to see the pumpkins and enjoy the festivities. Pumpkins start arriving at 9 a.m. Music runs from 9 a.m. to noon, with the official weighing starting at noon. There will be a giant pumpkin drop at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7 (rain date will be the 8th or 9th), 43 Kinnicutt Ave, Warren. Call 401/245-8245 for more information.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
